Report from Chief
Greetings my friends. I am excited to report that I have just returned from 2 weeks in Chautauqua, New York. For those of you who have never heard of Chautauqua, I regret to report that it is nearly impossible to describe. Imagine a small town which is 130 years old surrounded by a fence and situated on a lake. One needs a gate pass to enter the town, and there is no alcohol allowed in any public spaces or in any food establishments. The town was founded by an assembly of Methodists in the 19th century as a summer resort and has since grown into a remarkable institute for the arts, with their own professional Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Company, Opera Company, and Art Gallery, and the professionals from these groups teach high-school and college students who themselves are in training to be professionals. I was there as composer-in-residence for the Chautauqua Children’s Chorus but one of the highlights of my stay there was going to see the Beach Boys give a concert. What a thrill. Round Round get around, I get around, Barbara Ann, Fun Fun Fun, Surfin’ USA, In my Room, Good Vibrations, and many more hits were all performed in the Chautauqua Amphitheater to an enthusiastic and sober crowd. It’s good to be back in New York City and back on Salonities.net. Peace.
